Now, however, ships from the Five Galaxies--gene raiders, exterminators, busybodies, and what-all--threaten their isolationist idyll. Indistinguishable characters, wildly overcomplicated plotting, and cluttered backdrop: as before, a combination utterly unintelligible to newcomers, and a tough slog even for series fans.
