Before him lay a pile of dead and dying. Beyond them were others of their ilk: minions of Lord Vakhon. The lord sat his slender horse behind them, sharp-bearded hawk face expressionless. Behind Riandar on the thick buttress was the Slave Priestess, Trina, wearing nothing but the scanty sacrificial harness they had arrayed her in before he stole her from the Crypts of Doom in Scensifer, three days' ride to the north. Above them all the priests of Lei Makh looked dispassionately down. Riandar's sacrilege in invading the Crypts, slaying the Great Serpent, and stealing the girl meant little to the priests of Lei Makh, devotees of a rival cult. In the heat of the day's flight, Riandar had discarded his mail shirt, and had now thrown aside his tunic.
